Zorine Te: Why did you decide to make Heroes of the Storm one of the brawlers?

DB In the game, one of the things we wanted to emphasise in the game was the amount of action, particularly during the game's gameplay. We're doing things differently, as we unlock several abilities as we begin the game.

We're fairly generous with cooling, healing, and mana regeneration. We felt that it captured the essence of the game we're trying to make the game of a lifetime, where you join with your group of friends and fight against the enemy heroes.

ZT: Do you think you have some key characteristics that characterize this game as a brawler, rather than the MOBA game?

DB: It it was more of an tonal concern for us. We were trying to set an atmosphere for the music we wanted to make. Ours was a game about action and combat and getting in there and mixing it quickly. If you play our game, it's a little different from other games in the genre, where you go through a a long laning phase at the beginning of the game. It's kind of one-on-1. Our games usually begin with a team fight, in which you're all running for the watchtowers at the beginning of the game, and it's just a bloodbath for about 30 minutes, then things settle down.

Then a tribute will appear or a chest pops up out there, and you're on the move to collect these doubloons. The game falls very quickly from one-versus-ones to five-versus-fives and back down to one-versus-1 again. We tried to achieve the impression that it's an ongoing battle against the team of the opponent. You never know what you're likely to encounter You're always fighting not just one or two opponents.
